Explanation: If the dharmas that should be eliminated have not yet arisen, through the power of cultivating wholesome dharmas, one comes to know that the dharmas to be eliminated are like an illness, and with deep mind one feels disgust and aversion; one comes to know that the dharmas to be eliminated are like an abscess, like a poisoned arrow, obstructing the wisdom of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and non-self, and thus one's deep mind grows weary of them—this is called "knowing through cultivation." Having thus known the nature of the dharmas to be eliminated, because of repeated and repeated cultivation, the uninterrupted path arises and all afflictions are eliminated—this is called "elimination through cultivation." After the afflictions have been eliminated, one attains liberation—this is called "realization through cultivation." In this way one continually advances toward the wholesome dharmas of higher stages, and in this way causes the afflictions of lower stages to be eliminated, so that the dharmas of lower stages become ever more distant from oneself, until ultimately they are far removed—this is called "distance through cultivation." These should be known as the eight kinds of cultivation activity.
