Explanation: The cultivation of the path of preparation (prayoga-mārga) means that, by reason of this cultivation, one initiates the preparatory effort in order to eradicate afflictions. The cultivation of the uninterrupted path (ānantarya-mārga) means that, by reason of this cultivation, one directly eradicates afflictions. The cultivation of the path of liberation (vimukti-mārga) means that, by reason of this cultivation, one eradicates afflictions without interruption and attains liberation. The cultivation of the path of superior advancement (viśeṣa-mārga) means that, by reason of this cultivation, from this point onward one cultivates more excellent wholesome dharmas, to the point that the afflictions of the remaining bhūmis do not arise, and the dharmas of antidote and preparation perhaps also do not arise, enabling one to advance toward the ultimate stage of the four noble truths and the arising through separation [from defilement], never again to be born into the world of the three realms. These are the category distinctions of the eleven kinds of cultivation.
