If reciting the Buddha's name and reciting sutras has not successfully permeated the manas, and the manas has no mental thought of reciting the Buddha's name or reciting sutras, no memory of the Buddha and the sutras, then it would be impossible for the mind consciousness to wake up and discover that it is still reciting the Buddha's name and reciting sutras, or to turn back from its busy work and find that it is still reciting the Buddha's name and reciting sutras. The mind consciousness reciting the Buddha's name and sutras unconsciously is all actively led by the manas; it is the manas's voluntary mental activity. When the manas delights in reciting the Buddha's name and sutras, the mind consciousness, directed by the manas, does not forget to recite the Buddha's name and sutras no matter what it is doing. Therefore, the manas must possess the mental factor of mindfulness (smṛti), must possess memory, and must also possess determination (adhimokṣa); otherwise, the manas would not be susceptible to permeation and would not constantly want to recite the Buddha's name and sutras. From another perspective, the manas must also be in accord with meditative concentration (samādhi); it has become a habit. Persisting in one thing is itself concentration—only thus can the mind consciousness engage in one thing with constant singularity.
