Only After the Manas Attains Determination Can It Be Perfumed.

To fully permeate and guide the manas, the mind consciousness must diligently deliberate; without deliberation and contemplative practice (vipaśyanā-caryā), it is impossible to truly guide the manas.

If the manas lacks determination (adhimokṣa), can the deliberation, contemplative practice, and understanding of the mind consciousness guide the manas? Can the manas be permeated? Obviously not. No matter how the mind consciousness acts, the manas simply does not determine, and the mind consciousness's performance is utterly useless. Therefore, as long as the manas has been influenced, it has been permeated, meaning it has determined the information transmitted by the mind consciousness.

If the manas lacks determination, then whatever information the mind consciousness transmits is useless, and the manas will no longer decide to let the mind consciousness help it cognize any dharma; after the cognition, the manas still does not understand, so it will not decide to cognize. Then the manas will gradually quiet down, as if blind, deaf, mute, and dumb. In fact, the manas greatly enjoys having the mind consciousness cognize and discern things and then report back to itself, which shows that the manas must have determined the content of the mind consciousness's cognition; only then does it continuously prompt the mind consciousness to cognize, discriminate, think, and judge.
