When Master Daosheng (Sheng Gong) preached the Dharma, even the insensate stones nodded their heads.

Master Daosheng once said: even icchantikas can attain buddhahood. Since there was no basis or proof from any Buddhist sutra, everyone considered this claim to be wrong. But Master Daosheng held to his view and refused to change it, so the assembly expelled him from the Saṅgha. With no other recourse, Daosheng explained this principle to the stones, and the stones were moved to nod. Before long, the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra was transmitted from West India to China (Zhendan), in which the Buddha taught that icchantikas, after eliminating all ignorance and karmic obstructions, can attain buddhahood. This proved Master Daosheng correct, and only then was he accepted by the Saṅgha and allowed to return to it.
