Mahāyāna Sūtra of the Manifestation of Consciousness (65)

Original text: 由有种故。有色香味。识弃舍身。随其所迁。诸根境界。受及法界。皆悉随之。

Explanation: It is because there are seeds that the six sense objects—form, sound, smell, taste, and touch—exist. After the Ālayavijñāna abandons the present physical body, the seeds of the six sense objects migrate along with the Ālayavijñāna onto another physical body. On that other physical body, the eye faculty and its realm of form appear, the ear faculty and its realm of sound appear, the nose faculty and its realm of smell appear, the tongue faculty and its realm of taste appear, the body faculty and its realm of touch appear, and the manas and its realm of mental objects appear. In this way, the six consciousnesses are born accordingly, and the realms of feeling and dharmas are also born accordingly. When the six faculties, six sense objects, and six consciousnesses—the eighteen dharmas—all appear, this constitutes a complete sentient being.
